Philippines measles cases rising
MANILA, Philippines — Cases of measles in the country continue to grow this year compared to 2022, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
In its latest Disease Surveillance Report, the DOH said there were 1,114 measles cases recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 19 this year.
The figure is 215 percent higher compared to the 354 cases reported during the same period in 2022.
Among regions, Central Luzon recorded the most number of cases with 181 followed by Bangsamoro with 121 and Central Visayas with 117.
Regions that registered the highest increase are the Cordilleras with 1,100 percent or from one to 12 cases; Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos) with 1,033 percent or from nine to 102, and Central Luzon with 624 percent or 25 to 81 cases.
The country recorded four fatalities from measles this year and one in 2022.
Measles is an acute viral respiratory infection that causes skin rashes and flu-like symptoms. Vaccination is the best way to prevent contracting or spreading measles.
In May, the DOH launched an immunization campaign against measles and rubella targeting children aged nine to 59 months.
