Makati targets single-shift classes

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati government will upgrade public schools in the city to achieve its goal of instituting single shift classes for students.

“We have already plans in the coming years to build additional schools because the ambition of Makati is to do a single shift in our classes,” Makati Mayor Abigail Binay said in an interview over ANC on Friday.

Space is not an issue, Binay explained, since they can rebuild existing buildings in schools to have more classrooms.

Binay said schools in Makati are currently on two shifts, accommodating 45 to 50 students for every shift.

For Binay, there is a need to upgrade public schools in Makati, noting that some were constructed when her father, former vice president Jejomar Binay, was still mayor.

“We have the opportunity to upgrade and rebuild and make them higher and consume more of the space,” she said.

Binay said all classrooms have air purifiers apart from automated thermal scanners at school entrances.She did not give a figure but said the funds were sourced from the collection of real property taxes.
