Fire leaves 600 families homeless

MANILA, Philippines — At least 600 families were left homeless when a fire broke out at a slum area in Quezon City on Monday night.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze started at around 10:13 p.m. and reached second alarm. It was put out by firefighters at around 12:23 a.m. yesterday.

Arson probers said the fire originated on the third floor of a three-story shanty owned by the Pagaduan family. It destroyed around 300 houses at the corner of Mother Ignacia street and Roces Avenue in Barangay Paligsahan.

Two persons were treated for injuries.

Probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed P150,000 worth of property.

Blaze hits condo

Also in Quezon City, a fire broke out at a condominium along EDSA yesterday.

The BFP said the fire at the 46-story Victoria Sports Tower II in Barangay South Triangle started at the gym on the fifth floor at around 12:59 p.m. and reached first alarm.

The BFP said at least 400 families were evacuated from their units as smoke engulfed the fifth floor.

The blaze was put out at around 2:56 p.m. There were no casualties in the fire, according to the BFP.

Probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed P3.5 million worth of property.
