Stop bread price hike, DTI asked
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has urged the government, particularly the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), to act on the looming increase in prices of bread products, saying Filipinos are still experiencing hunger due to the pandemic and Typhoon Odette.
Pangilinan made the appeal amid reports that the country’s largest association of bread makers is seeking the government’s approval to increase the price of their products, including packs of Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal.
On Friday, the Philippine Baking Industry Group said the projected price increase of bread products was triggered by the soaring prices of flour, which have gone up from P710 per sack to P995.
“Our countrymen are reeling from successive price increases. The DTI must be proactive, instead of just waiting for the prices to surge and not do anything preemptively,” Pangilinan said in Filipino.
He said the spiraling prices of basic commodities like bread could lead to a spike in hunger incidence, especially among children living in blighted areas of the country.
