Cops, MMDA nearly clash in clearing operation
MANILA, Philippines — Policemen assigned with the Manila city hall nearly clashed with personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) during a sidewalk clearing operation in Tondo yesterday.
Meat and fish vendors sought the help of members of the Special Mayor’s Reaction Team under Maj. Rosalino Ibay Jr. after the MMDA personnel allegedly took their goods.
The operation occured along Capulong Road 10 and Magsaysay street in Tondo.
Following a heated exchange of words between Ibay and the MMDA personnel, a policeman boarded the dump truck where the goods were loaded and returned these to the vendors.
Tension subsided after the MMDA team left the area.
Mayor Isko Moreno ordered the clearing operation after a resident complained that Barangay 116 chairman Edgar Solis allegedly turned Capulong street into a pay parking area.
Several vehicles were towed, drivers were cited for illegal parking and the makeshift market on the sidewalk was demolished.
Police invited Solis to explain allegations that he was earning from illegal parking, but he refused.
Ibay said charges of graft would be filed against Solis if the complaints against him are proven true.
