NBI nabs ex-cop tagged in detainee’s torture
MANILA, Philippines — A former policeman who went AWOL (absent without official leave) over the alleged torture of a detainee of the police community precinct in Tondo, Manila was arrested on Thursday afternoon.
Nonito Binayug was nabbed by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) along C. Reina street in Binondo after two weeks of surveillance.
The Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 1 has issued a warrant for Binayug’s arrest, according to the NBI.
Binayug is the younger brother of Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug, who received flak after a video footage showed him torturing a robbery suspect went viral on social media in 2010.
The elder Binayug was nabbed in front of the Land Transportation Office in Manila in 2013.
No bail was recommended for his arrest, but six other non-commissioned police officers who were also charged were allowed to post bail.
Joselito is serving time at the Manila city jail.
Nonito went into hiding after the incident.
NBI special action unit chief Emeterio Dongallo said barangay officials informed them about Nonito’s presence in the area, leading to his arrest.
Nonito denied that he was involved in the torture of the detainee.
