3 barangay captains held for cockfights

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, Philippines —Three barangay captains and their companions were arrested for alleged illegal cockfights in Barangay Mangga, Aringay, La Union on Sunday night.

Police identified the suspects as Wilson Apurado, Andres Mercado and Ricky Santiago, chairmen of Barangays Macabato, Sta. Cecilia and Gallano, respectively, as well as Joe Allan Ruiz and Eduardo Grigillana.

Three fighting cocks and P10,700 in bet money were among those reportedly recovered from the suspects.

The suspects face charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 or illegal gambling and violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
