4.9 quake jolts Ilocos region

MANILA, Philippines - A 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, which was also felt in the neighboring province of Ilocos Sur early yesterday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake reportedly triggered an Intensity 2 movement in Laoag City and Sarat in Ilocos Norte; Santa, Ilocos Sur and in Baguio City.

The tremor took place at 1 a.m. and was located 32 kilometers southwest of Laoag City. It was said to be tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs said they are not expecting any aftershocks or damage as a result of the quake.
