MANILA, Philippines - There was less garbage collected by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for New Year’s Day this year compared to last year.
MMDA General Manager Corazon Jimenez said clearing crews sent by the MMDA to the Rizal Park on Tuesday to clear-up after the New Year’s Eve revelry, collected two truckloads of garbage.
“In general, there was less garbage this year than last year. People are now more conscious,” said Jimenez.
Aside from clearing crews, the MMDA on New Year’s Eve also mobilized its fire trucks to aid the Bureau of Fire Protection, particularly against tires burning in the streets.
"We know BFP will have its hands full in monitoring Metro Manila during the New Year's Eve revelries. Our fire trucks and trained personnel will be on 24-hour alert," Tolentino said.
Tolentino earlier appealed to the public not to burn tires on the streets as this threaten both the environment and public health.
“Burning tires also damage road surfaces, especially asphalt,” Tolentino said.
