MANILA, Philippines — Carl Joseph Papa’s "Iti Mapukpukaw" (The Missing) is the Philippines’entry to the 96th Academy Awards’ Best Film Category this year.

Cinemalaya’s 2023 Best Film revolves around Eric (Carlo Aquino), who works as an animator. He has no mouth. He lives in an apartment, has a good job, and he likes a guy.

"Iti Mapukpukaw" (The Missing) also stars Dolly de Leon, who won best supporting actress at the Cinemalaya awards for the role. De Leon won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for Triangle of Sadness.

"Iti Mapukpukaw" was the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific) awards’ Best Film.  It.is De Leon and Aquino’s first animated film.

It was cited for  “its finely nuanced, masterfully crafted, tale of healing, friendships and young love, effectively utilizing state-of-the-art technology that is integral to its storytelling.”

The Film Development Council of the Philippines’ (FDCP) Oscars Assistance Program is reportedly giving P1 million to Papa and his team.

"Iti Mapukpukaw," however, failed to make the cut.

Making the cut for the Best International Feature Film shortlist were expected entrants Denmark's "The Promised Land" starring Mads Mikkelsen, Japan's "Perfect Days" directed by Wim Wenders, Spain's "Society of the Snow" directed by J.A. Bayona, and the United Kingdom's "The Zone of Interest."

This year’s Oscars will be held on March 10 in Los Angeles.
