MANILA, Philippines - Asian Carmakers Corporation (ACC), the country’s official importer of BMW automobiles, proudly unveiled its newest 4-door offering, the all-new 1Series last Wednesday November 23.

The 2nd generation entry-level hatchback boasts of increased dimensions that highlight the car’s roomier interior space. Bimmer’s premium hatch is now longer at 4324 mm and wider at 2690 mm, representing a growth of 85 mm and 30 mm respectively from the older model. Although the vehicle’s height remains unchanged, the wheelbase has been stretched by 30 mm, which directly enhances ride comfort. Consideration for rear occupants was prioritized, thus allotting them with 21 mm more legroom, while the boot space has been expanded by 30 liters to allow for more cargo. Having said that, its still no lounge area for six-footers.

BMW promises a higher level of refinement and sportiness with the new 1Series, as it sees the model mature with new engine, suspension, and driver aiding technologies. Initially, ACC will offer the 1Series in three distinct variants: the gasoline powered 116i, and the diesel powered 118d Urban Line and 118d Sport Line.

Style-wise, the new 1Series reflects the family genealogy of the bigger kidney grille, pointier headlights, and clean chiseled lines. During the launch, brothers Anton and Armand Del Rosario, known football aficionados (the former is a star of the Philippine Azkals) were on hand to help introduce the new 1-Series. Anton showcased the 1Series Sport Line model, geared for those with a craving for excitement and pulse-raising looks. The Sport Line is characterized with the brighter red coat, larger 5 spoke alloy wheels, and red stitching on the seats. On the other hand, his older brother Armand presented the 1Series Urban Line, a more subdued yet cosmopolitan take on this new BMW. Painted deep blue, the Urban Line is set apart by silver accents on the grille and bumper, while body key-colored panels serve to accentuate its luxurious feel.

Installed on the 1Series are the new generation of BMW’s petrol and diesel engines. Debuting on the 116i is BMW’s new TwinPower Turbo technology that features a twin-scroll turbocharger, high precision injection, Valvetronic, and Double-Vanos systems. Through modern turbocharging, BMW is able to provide adequate power in a small displacement engine while ensuring fuel efficiency in everyday use. It has an output of 136 hp @ 4400 rpm and max torque of 220 Nm between 1350 to 4300 rpm. In real world figures, the 116i can accelerate to 100 km/h from stop in 9.1 secs and reach a top speed of 210 km/h. Fuel consumption for EU combined testing was rated at 5.6L per 100 km.

Powerful yet efficient, the 118d is the current range topper reflecting the consumers’ willingness to trust today’s diesel technology. It puts out 143 hp @ 4000 rpm and produces a solid 320 Nm of twist from 1750 to 2500 rpm. 0-100 km/h comes in a shorter 8.9 seconds, and it can also reach a slightly higher terminal velocity of 212 km/h. Combined EU cycle for fuel consumption is 4.5L per 100 km.

Dynamic driving continues to be the 1Series’ core trait, provided by its best in class suspension. Double joint cross strut front axle with Macpherson struts comprise the front, while a five-link rear set up is found in the rear. Benefitting from a wider track, the 1 still boasts of a 50:50 weight distribution for ideal balance. Of course, rear wheel drive is the only option.

An impressive list of standard electronic aids abound that is to be expected with modern BMWs. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensures safety on all weather conditions, while stopping power is enhanced by ABS, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC also allows for automatic brake drying and hill assist). All 1Series models offer three driving modes namely Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro. Sport Line models are kitted with a fourth mode called Sport+ for enhanced driver enjoyment.

Pricing for the all new 1Series are as follows: BMW 116i at P2,290,000, BMW 118d Urban Line at P2,490,000, and the 118d Sport Line at P2,690,000.
