NBI-Tarlac personnel axed over Extortion

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has relieved all personnel of the NBI-Tarlac district office and placed them on floating status amid an investigation into an alleged extortion activity.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag said yesterday that the bureau’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating the personnel following a complaint.
“We have relieved all of them in Tarlac. They are now on floating status and are being investigated by our Internal Affairs Division,” Matibag told radio dzRH.
He did not disclose the identities and the exact number of personnel tagged in the alleged extortion as well as the amount involved.
Matibag appealed to the complainant to cooperate in the investigation, noting that the victim may be dealing with trauma and fear.
“Our agency is ready to help and protect them,” Matibag said, adding that the victim’s cooperation is important in establishing the facts and pursuing administrative and other charges.
He said the NBI would continue its internal investigation while taking steps to protect the complainant.
The NBI office in Tarlac operates both as an investigative unit and clearance processing center.
