DPWH: PGH drainage works speed up

MANILA, Philippines — Construction of major drainage, sewage and flood mitigation facilities at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is being accelerated by the Department of Public Works and Highways.

At yesterday’s inspection, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said overall project progress has surged to nearly 30 percent in just three months, from a stagnant two percent in June.

“In June, we saw that this project had only achieved two percent progress in one-and-a-half years under the previous contractor,” Dizon said.

“We essentially brought in a subcontractor to take over operations to fast-track work without the lengthy six to-eight-month delay of a full rebidding process. In three months, we jumped to almost 30 percent,” he added.

The project covers the construction and rehabilitation of buildings in the PGH complex along Taft Avenue in Manila, with a contract amount of P679.081 million.

Dizon assured hospital officials that internal drainage network is slated for completion by year-end.

The sewage treatment plant, septic tanks, road network, perimeter fence and building facade restoration will be delivered within the first quarter of 2027.

To complement internal compound works, Dizon said the DPWH has integrated external flood control upgrades into its 2027 budget.
