DepEd, DBM: P31.2 billion proposed for over 64K teaching posts

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) clarified Thursday that the proposed 2027 national budget provides P31.220 billion to fill 64,530 authorized teaching positions.

The agencies said the funding disproves reports that there would be “zero funding” for teacher hiring in 2027.

Of the positions, 31,614 were existing vacancies recorded as of April 24, 2026, while 32,916 were newly created and approved by DBM in May.

DepEd reported that as of September 4, 33,250 teaching positions had already been filled, with 25,019 still vacant.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara, in a statement, said teacher hiring will not stop next year, while Budget Secretary Kim Robert De Leon stressed that the priority is to fill positions already authorized rather than create another batch while thousands remain vacant.

The proposed 2027 budget also includes P7.582 billion for substitute teachers and P12.09 billion for the Expanded Career Progression System.

The clarification came amid reports that DepEd’s request for 14,274 additional teaching positions worth about P4.29 billion was not included in the proposed 2027 National Expenditure Program. – MRM (CEBU NEWS)
