Talisay councilor asks for funds for scholarship plan

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Councilor Aldin Diaz is seeking funds from the city government for a scholarship program he is endorsing which is aimed at helping indigent families send their children to school.

“Education is important in order to have a better life,” Diaz said.

Under the proposal, only one member of a family can become a scholar.

He will receive P3,500 per semester if he qualifies.

The scholarship covers the tuition and other fees such as books and other school expenses.

Only the poorest of the poor will benefited from the program.

Earlier, first district Representative Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas will allocate funds from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to his scholarship program.

The scholarship program, started by his grandfather, former congressman Eduardo Gullas, is for poor but deserving students who wish to pursue a college education.

It will be called the “Samsam Gullas Scholarship Program.”

The cities of Talisay, Naga, and Carcar, and the municipalities of Minglanilla, San Fernando, and Sibonga comprise the first district.

Around 60 students in the first district were granted scholarships during the time of the former congressman but Samsam will increase the number to 800 scholars to be enrolled in the Talisay City College, Cebu Technical University (CTU) in San Fernando, Carcar, and Sibonga Community College, and TESDA.
