Mandaue to give cash, plaques to four centenarians next month

CEBU, Philippines - There are now four confirmed centenarians living in Mandaue City and each of them will receive P50,000 and a centenarian plaque when the city marks Senior Citizens Month next month.

Yesterday, the Mandaue City council approved a resolution proposed by Councilor Demetrio Cortes Jr.  which authorizes Mayor Jonas Cortes to release the sum of P200,000 for the cash awards.

Cortes’ resolution was approved yesterday.

To date, the city has four centenarians with Olympia Judilla,106 years old, being the oldest.

The others include Lourdes Lasap,101 years old, of barangay Banilad, Emiliana Cabrera of barangay Guizo, and Leoncio Lumapas of barangay Ibabao-Estancia.

Last year, the city council approved an ordinance authored by Cortes Jr. which sought to honor and confer the centenary senior citizen awards to qualified elderly every October of the year.

Under the ordinance, the centenarians are supposed to received a centenarian plaque and P5,000 only.

When Cortes Jr. felt that the amount was too small, amended the ordinance two months ago, raising the cash award to P50,000.

And for the centenarians to avail of the rewards and plaque from the city, their immediate families must present their birth certificates or any proof that would show that they are already 100 years old and above as well as barangay certificates as proof they reside in the city. (FREEMAN)
