Viber launches eSIM service in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Messaging app Rakuten Viber has entered the eSIM market in the Philippines, offering Filipinos roaming services whenever they go abroad to stay connected.

Viber has launched the initial phase of its in-app eSIM, allowing Filipinos to purchase data packages when traveling overseas.

The eSIM removes the need for Filipinos to buy a local SIM upon landing abroad, which is also entailed with the hassle of registering a new number.

Viber sees the eSIM as an alternative, as users can activate mobile data without needing another SIM. The eSIM is also expected to become a larger revenue driver for carriers, as travelers start to adopt it for their international trips.

Based on a study by Juniper Research, the global eSIM market gained $1.8 billion in revenue last year. Between 2025 and 2030, Juniper Research estimates the market growing fivefold, reaching as high as $8.7 billion.

Rakuten Viber chief product officer Nadav Melnick said the eSIM supports Viber’s aspiration to become a superapp by bringing in as many services as possible.

“This launch reinforces Viber as a single platform that supports a wide range of user needs, (and) we’re evolving a messaging app into an everyday utility, making international travel simpler and more affordable,” Melnick said.

Recently, Viber has added new services to its platform, onboarding an enterprise arm in Business Accounts, a dating channel in Viber Dating and a payment outlet in Viber Pay.

The eSIM also opens up an opportunity for travel, telco and payment brands to work with Viber in expanding their product portfolios.

Melnick said partners could develop travel-related services to complement the eSIM, eliminating the need to find connectivity providers abroad.

Filipinos may activate their eSIM on Viber by opening the eSIM section on the app. Afterward, they may browse and subscribe to a roaming plan covering hundreds of destinations.

Payment is integrated on Viber to prevent spam attacks from malicious actors, and installation is outlined step-per-step for ease.

Rakuten Viber is adding more functions on Viber on top of its messaging function in a bid to turn the platform into a superapp.
