Philippine humanitarian team returns after Myanmar mission

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent (PIAHC) – deployed to aid in the rescue and relief operations in Myanmar following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake – is scheduled to arrive back in the country today after completing its mission, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
The entire contingent, comprising 89 personnel from various agencies, will be welcomed in a ceremony to honor their service when they arrive at the Villamor Air Base.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. yesterday relayed President Marcos’ congratulations, commending the team for their work.
Civil Defense Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno will welcome the contingent upon their return.
“I honor your courage and compassion to serve. As a Filipino, I am immensely proud of each of you for being ready to help our neighbors in their time of need,” Nepomuceno said.
The PIAHC includes members from the following agencies: OCD, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, Department of Health - Philippine Emergency Medical Assistance Team (PEMAT), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Emergency Response Team, Energy Development Corp. and Apex Mining Co. Inc.
Lt. Erwen Diploma, contingent commander, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
The contingent concluded its operations, with all teams accounted for and preparations for demobilization underway. The Urban Search and Rescue Team officially wrapped up its activities in Nay Pyi Taw, while the PEMAT conducted final medical consultations and delivered essential supplies to the Myanmar Ministry of Health.
A congratulatory assembly held on Saturday recognized the team’s dedication and resilience throughout the mission. Charge d’Affaires Angelito Nayan of the Philippine embassy in Myanmar acknowledged their efforts, reinforcing the significance of their work during a critical time.
