US Navy submarine docks in Subic

MANILA, Philippines — An attack submarine from the US Navy on Thursday arrived at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone for a routine port visit.

Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Bremerton, the oldest commissioned submarine in the US Navy, is currently deployed to the Indo-Pacific region.

The routine port call to the Philippines demonstrates the commitment of the US Navy to regional stability and maritime security in the US 7th Fleet area of operations, the US Embassy said in a statement.

The visit also gives Bremerton's crew of 150 sailors to meet the local community in the Subic area.

"Bremerton’s arrival into Subic Bay means a lot to both my crew and the U.S. submarine force," commanding officer Cmdr. Travis Zettel said.

Bremerton regularly conducts missions to maintain proficiency in the latest submarine fleet capabilities. It can work independently or with a carrier strike group.

This is the ninth visit of Bremerton to Subic Bay in its 37-year history, according to Zettel.

"My crew and I are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the local community while simultaneously preparing the ship for the remainder of our deployment," Zettel said.

The ship measures 300 long and weighs more than 6,000 tons when submerged. It is capable of supporting various missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and mine warfare.

Prior to its visit to Subic Bay, Bremerton went to Singapore to conduct missions and maintain proficiency of the submarine fleet's capabilities.

Last week, the Carl Vinson Strike Group left Manila after completing a four-day port visit. The strike group is also deployed to the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on working with partners and allies, promoting freedom of the seas and enhancing regional security. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
