Uber pays P190M fine to lift suspension

MANILA, Philippines — Ride-sharing company Uber Systems Inc. on Tuesday paid its P190 million fine before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to lift its one-month suspension.

Uber settled the payment through legal counsels Ane Mascenon and Roberto Ramiro.

In an earlier recorded ambush interview, Ramiro refused to confirm that the transport network company made the payment saying “they are not at liberty to speak” about the matter and that they just went to the board’s office as per “instructions of their client.”

Reports, however, confirmed that Uber settled the payment with a manager’s check of P190 million from Deutsche bank.

On Friday evening, LTFRB released a nine-page order to the media imposing a P190 million penalty to Uber to commensurate the one-month suspension issued on August 14.

The LTFRB said it based the amount on the daily earnings of Uber, which the ride-sharing services said ranges from P7 million to P10 million through 150,000 trips a day and multiplied by the remaining 19 days it is supposed to be suspended.

On August 14, the LTFRB ordered the suspension of Uber's accreditation for a month. The board also directed the suspension of its online booking application during the same period.

Uber filed a motion for reconsideration but the board junked the motion.

The LTFRB also issued a resolution allowing drivers of suspended ride-sharing company Uber to operate under other transport network companies, MYTAXI.PH Inc. or Grab and U-Hop.
