2 low-pressure areas spotted

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - Weather forecasters spotted yesterday two low-pressure areas (LPAs) off Batanes and Ilocos Norte.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported yesterday afternoon that at 5 p.m., an LPA was spotted about 890 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes.

The LPA has been in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) since Thursday and is expected to move out of the country today.

Weather forecaster Joel Jesusa discounted the possibility of the weather disturbance turning into a tropical depression.

The second LPA was seen at 270 kilometers west southwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Its circulation was improving but because it is close to land, there is only a 50 percent chance of it becoming a tropical depression, Jesusa said.

Pagasa said it would continue to monitor the development of the two LPAs in the next two days.

Jesusa clarified that despite the two LPAs, Pagasa has not yet officially declared the rainy season.
