MANILA, Philippines — Actors, both newbies and veterans, need a platform to learn the ropes of their craft and gain a foothold in it. Regal Studio Presents (RSP) has simply done it all.

Its featured artists are grateful for what the GMA 7-Regal Entertainment weekly anthology provides them: to play new roles and pair up with new collaborators. Most importantly, it jumpstarts or boosts their career in acting.

“This is where I got started, in Regal Studio Presents. My first project was with direk Easy Ferrer,” said Dustin Yu in a recent press conference that announced the show’s second anniversary and presented him and Shayne Sava, Will Ashley and Althea Ablan, Yasser Marta and Lexi Gonzales as tandems in the recent and upcoming episodes.

“Every time I get an inquiry for RSP, I’m very thankful and I really prepare for it, the same thing (that I do) with other big projects. For me, I do have the same preparation,” added the chinito young actor, whose first TV series was Mano Po Legacy: The Family Fortune. “Since it’s a short episode, mas marami kang ma-e-encounter na roles and characters (the show allows us to portray and encounter many roles and characters).”

For the Mother, Mother, Where Are You? episode, Dustin shares the screen for the first time with Shayne, whose perennial partner is Abdul Raman. Shayne and Abdul are among the Kapuso network’s Sparkle Sweethearts with Raising Mamay as their official team-up project. They also headlined the first story of Sparkle U, the youth-oriented series airing Sundays.

“It’s about an influencer who wants to create content that will help her find her mom,” said Shayne of the RSP episode. “Along the way, while searching for her mom, my character will meet the character of Dustin, who will also help her. The story will revolve around the idea of finding my character’s real mom because a lot come forward and claim that they are her mom.”

According to Shayne, taping an RSP episode is fun and light.

Yasser Marta and Lexi Gonzales.

“I get to experience (to play) characters that are far different from the ones I’ve done in drama series,” said she. “Nalalaro mo yung bawat character kasi iba-iba po siya every season.”

This is true with Will and Althea, who have done teen and family drama before.

“It’s a magical story and very exciting,” said Althea of The Poster Boy episode, which shows the stark contrast between Gen Z and millennials, lifestyle-wise. “My character will be the one showing him (Will’s character) new things such as gadgets. She will show these and teach him how. It’s super fun and very light. His character literally comes from the poster.”

Given their characters’ plight, viewers should look forward to “what will happen to our characters when Will’s becomes part of my character’s life. She is just a homebody.”

And, it’s interesting to know what the future holds for them, added Althea.

As for Will, he also stars in the GMA and ABS-CBN collaboration Unbreak My Heart, working with Jodi Sta. Maria, Richard Yap, Joshua Garcia, Gabbi Garcia and Kapamilya star Bianca de Vera, as well as flexes his acting muscles in shows like RSP.

“I’ll take these blessings as steps for me and an inspiration to do better for other projects that I will do,” said he, who has shown his potential as a reliable dramatic actor.

Asked if they had to work on their screen partnership by attending workshops for RSP, Will answered, “I think parang hindi na namin need to work (on it) kasi yung napagsamahan namin simula nung bata pa kami, I think magiging madali na rin yun para sa amin (I don’t think there’s a need for Althea and I to work on it because we’ve worked together since we were young. It will come in handy).”

Will and Althea were part of the afternoon drama Prima Donnas. This was before he ventured into the series The Fake Life and Unbreak My Heart and she in AraBella.

Like Will and Althea, Yasser and Lexi were partnered for the first time in Regal Studio Presents via the Battle of the Exes episode. But they often see each other in AOS (All-Out Sundays), said he.

“So, parang hindi na namin kailangan i-break yung ice (there was no need to break the ice), when we were on set, parang matagal na rin kaming magkakilala (we felt we had known each other for a long time). Lexi would always reach out in every scene,” recalled Yasser.

Since both of them are “kalog” (cool and fun to be with), it was easy for Yasser and Lexi to agree and make the partnership required for their work, said Lexi, who gets used to working with different leading men.

“Like my last Regal Studio Presents before my episode with Yasser, (I worked with) with Dustin. So, suki na rin po ako ng Regal Studio Presents (I’ve been its frequent artist), I’m very thankful for it,” added she.

Yasser, for his part, has had his own share of love teams. Working with different actors and actresses is healthy for their careers. This is part of any thespian’s learning.

Among the lessons viewers can learn from each inspiring and feel-good story about love and relationships told in Regal Studio Presents is the importance of loyalty, specific to Yasser and Lexi’s episode.

“Loyalty is one of the foundations of a relationship,” said he. “‘Pag wala yun, hindi din naman mag-wo-work ang isang relationship (Without it, the relationship will not work). For me, it is important, isa yun sa mga kailangan buuin (it’s one of those values that need to be built).”

“With loyalty comes trust,” concluded she. “(Earning and giving) trust is important in a relationship.”

Regal Studio Presents airs every Sunday afternoon.
