Plot twists and intriguing narratives thrive on ABS-CBN’s The Good Son, but its focus on Filipino family values also makes it a hit among viewers.

Irene Tuazon, an avid fan of the show, said she appreciates how the show lifts up the family angle in every episode and admires the almost true-to-life portrayal of the characters.

“At the end of the day, your family will always be your source of strength. No matter what judgment people may cast on you, your family still knows you best,” said Irene, who owns a travel agency.

She also sees the show as a perfect medium to encourage millennials to make a difference and create their own path.

“Joseph (Joshua Garcia) depicts what millennials can be if they choose to use their strength for the benefit of their families. They are young and a lot skillful than the previous generations. I hope they use this to make a mark in people’s lives,” said the mother of three.

Since September, The Good Son has played on viewers’ minds every night, teasing who is the real culprit behind Victor’s (Albert Martinez) death. But more than the suspense and mystery, it is how the show represents the common Filipino household through its characters that grip viewers on to its thrilling scenes daily.

Joseph is admired for his pure heart and conviction to seek justice for the death of his father. Although labeled as bastardo and mamamatay tao, he remains as a loving son to his mother Raquel (Mylene Dizon) and puts his family’s welfare first. He is also willing to set aside his differences with his half-brother Enzo (Jerome Ponce) just to honor their late dad’s wish. He proved this when he saved Enzo’s life from unknown abductors that tried to kill them, which momentarily mended their relationship as brothers.

His brother Obet (McCoy de Leon), on the other hand, is the life of the family. He instantly lights up the room with his antics that simply fades their sadness away. A reliable son, he has taken jobs such as a waiter, cosplayer and even a mascot just to provide for their family. He may take things lightly, but when it comes to his family, Obet does not have any second thoughts and will do all the sacrifice he can for them.

Often misunderstood, Enzo, is the family’s achiever. He may come across as violent and hot-headed to most people, but this is only the result of his desire for excellence to keep his parents proud. This explains his anger against Joseph because he sees him as a threat, fueling his hatred and pushing him to take him out of his life. But behind the gritty facade, an endearing brother and son lies in Enzo. He will protect his family at all cost and fulfill his father’s duties to keep them intact.

Unlike his older brother, Calvin (Nash Aguas) is always on the background, often unheard of and left out. But among them, he has the biggest love to give and only wants peace in their lives. He serves as the common ground for both families, helping ease the tension once things heat up.

The Good Son consistently rules on its timeslot in terms of national TV ratings and recorded an all-time high of 21 percent, according to Kantar Media. It also tops the list of trending topics every night, earning thousands of tweets from netizens.

The Good Son also features Loisa Andalio, Elisse Joson and Alexa Ilacad, Mylene Dizon, Eula Valdez, John Estrada, Ronnie Lazaro, Jeric Raval, Alex Medina and Kathleen Hermosa. It is under the direction of Manny Palo and Andoy Ranay.

The Good Son airs weeknights after La Luna Sangre on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida. For details, go to fb.com/dreamscapeph and follow @DreamscapePH on Twitter and Instagram.
