Visayan ‘talkie’ greets Manila

In 1950, the first Visayan talking picture, Dimakaling, was shown in Manila upon the request of Visayans residing in the city. The Cebu Star Picture movie was hyped as ‘The first Visayan talking picture to greet Manila audience.’

Dimakaling focused on Muslim insurgency and the military. Written and directed by Leox Juezan, with music by Prof. Manuel Velez, Dimakaling starred Esterlina, Bert Nombrado and Tancred Juezan in the title role. — RKC
