Las Piñas maintenance chief axed over 'slow' calamity response
MANILA, Philippines — Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon relieved the maintenance chief of the DPWH Las Piñas-Muntinlupa District Engineering Office over repeated reports of slow response to calamities and lack of urgency as Metro Manila continues to bear the brunt of continuous rainfall and flooding.
In a memorandum dated August 29, Dizon ordered the immediate relief of engineer Loreto Balena Jr. as maintenance chief.
"In view of repeated reports concerning your unsatisfactory performance, lack of urgency, and delayed response to calamities, you are hereby relieved of your duties as Maintenance Chief of the Las Piñas-Muntinlupa District Engineering Office, effective immediately," Dizon said in the memo.
Balena was directed to complete an inventory, sign and finish pending documents and deliverables, and turn over official records, papers and government properties in his custody.
The Department of Public Works and Highways said the action followed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to remove officials who neglect their duties and tighten discipline within the agency.
