Property firm leads cleanup of adopted creek

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Property developer DMCI Homes, together with partners and volunteers, cleaned up the Pasong Tamo creek in Quezon City last May as an effort of commitment to community service and in protecting the environment.

More than 100 people collected and removed garbage from the 1.3-kilometer creek in Barangay Bahay Toro and Culiat. Volunteers of the annual cleanup consisted of DMCI Homes employees as well as personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and Laguna Lake Development Authority; Quezon City Senior Scouts; and representatives of the Rotary Club of Diliman Silangan (RCDS).

As corporate sponsor of the cleanup, DMCI Homes provided cleaning essentials like rubber boots, gloves and cleaning tools to the volunteers, who braved the summer heat in support of the DENR's Adopt-An-Estero project. Company representatives also provided drinking water and meals during the day-long civic activity.

DMCI Homes adopted the creek in 2012 to help the DENR rehabilitate polluted waterways. In the memorandum of agreement, DMCI Homes committed to provide material and manpower support, including setting up trash traps in the creek and providing food for volunteer cleaners.

The RCDS acknowledged the important contribution of the residential resort leader to the success of the Adopt-An-Estero program.

RCDS is currently heading a project to preserve Quezon City's 560 hectares of watershed consisting of waterways stretching 20 kilometers long.

The cleanup was also an opportunity for the Boy Scouts of the Philippines to fulfill its mission of inculcating community service among its members.
