CEBU, Philippines — After a longsome pause because of the global pandemic, the Mayor Alegado Fiesta Cup in the municipality of Consolacion is back for its 11th edition.

And it’s even better, bigger, and grander this time.

Featuring a total of 14 disciplines, the multi-sport action will kick off with an elaborate opening ceremony this Saturday, September 10, at the Consolacion National High School (CNHS) covered court in Barangay Poblacion Occidental.

“This has been awaited with more anticipation as the people are really longing to have this event again. Andam na kaayo ang atong lungsod. Ang tanan nga mga SK, ang tanan nga mga chairman sa different barangays nag-preparar gyud niini,” said Consolacion Mayor Teresa “Nene” P. Alegado.

“I know how enthusiastic our people are kay ang Consolacion is the home of sports. When it comes to sports, ang tanan  among gisuportaan. Ang among gobiyerno wala magpabaya sa sports and all year round ni, from our fiesta to Christmas, to our foundation day and summer league.”

“Sa pagka karon, assured nako ang mga katawhan nga ang ilang gikamingawan kaayo nga mga sports activities ibalik na nato. We will try our best to bring back the enthusiasm of our people,” Alegado continued.

Aside from the centerpiece basketball tournament, the other events to be contested in the month-long tilt spicing up Consolacion’s annual fiesta celebration in honor of their beloved patron San Narciso on October 29 are volleyball (including the traditional dayon-dayon), boxing, badminton, taekwondo, table tennis, karatedo, sepak takraw, lawn tennis, chess, and billiards.

“First of all, I have to thank God nga nibalik na sa normal ang sitwasyon ug makapahigayon nata’g sports events. To my fellow Consolacionanons, the return of the Mayor Teresa Alegado Fiesta Cup is different and more exciting because we will showcase 14 sporting events that will be participated by 21 barangays,” sports commissioner Paul Alelu Flores said.

“More importantly, this will be an opportunity for each barangay representative to show their potentials and at the same time establish camaraderie among their fellow players,” added Flores.

Sangguniang Kabataan Federation (SKF) President Carlos Donn Flores echoed the same sentiments.

“This would be an avenue for the youth to showcase their talents in the field they are good at. This would also motivate more sports enthusiasts to continue to strive hard because who knows, we will be molding champion athletes in the future,” Donn Flores said.
