NCAA's Heavy Bombers to hold tryout in Cebu

- EBV -

CEBU, Philippines - The Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers, a member of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), will hold an open tryout in an effort to augment their men’s basketball program this weekend from 1 to 3 pm at the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) gym.

JRU, which made it to the NCAA Final Four for two consecutive years already, is in the middle of a massive buildup as six of its key players are graduating this year.

The extensive tryout will be handled by JRU head coach former PBA superstar Vergel "The Voyager" Meneses, a proud JRU alumnus. He will be joined by team consultant Derek Pumaren.

Those who are skillful enough to make it to the JRU varsity will enjoy full athletic scholarship, free dormitory and related allowances.

In its storied history, JRU has produced five basketball Olympians in Eduardo Fulgencio (1948), Florentino Bautista (1952), Mariano Tolentino (1956), Edgardo Roque (1960, 1964) and Elias Tolentino (1964, 1968).

Aside from Meneses, the other notable JRU cagers in the past include Philip Cezar, Estilito Epondulan (1990 NCAA senior MVP) and Johnedel Cardel among others.

Did you know that...

The Jose Rizal University got its moniker from the abundance of World War II vintage bombs in their campus. The JRU campus, like many others, was turned into a garrison by the Japanese army. This led to many vintage bombs mined beneath the campus, which led to the heavy bombers moniker.
