CEBU, Philippines - From putting the Queen City of the South in the world map through dancesport, Edward Hayco will be spreading his wings further as he was appointed as the chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission, the city’s sports arm.

Hayco was a bit hesitant at first, because he said that when he wants to get into something, he makes sure he can perform well and meet the demands. But with the prodding of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Hayco gave in.

As chairman of the CCSC, he also serves as the mayor’s sports consultant.

Aside from Hayco, also named new commissioners from the private sector to the CCSC including basketball and boxing patron Lorenzo Sy, extreme sport enthusiast-businessman Brian Lim, volleyball official-businessman Andrew Choachuy, SWU’s athletic director and PRISAA regional head, Ryan Aznar and taekwondo official Tony del Prado.

The Freeman managing editor and sportsman Nimrod NL Quiñones and Danilo Villadolid retained their post as commissioners.

Quiñones is the longest serving commissioner here having served the CCSC since 1998.

Villadolid is part of the commission representing the Department of Education.

Cebu City Vice-Mayor Joy Agustus Young, the man behind the creation of the CCSC also has a seat in the body as chairman of the city council’s education committee along with Councilors Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, Joey Daluz, and SK Federation president Rengelle Pelayo. Joy Avila is the board’s secretary.

Young urged the new officials of CCSC yesterday at the City Hall’s Caucus room to review previous projects and sports programs.

Councilor Daluz, who sits in the body as chairman of the council committee on budget and finance, added that the CCSC should have its own funding as the city’s budget for sports is under the office of the Mayor.

“Mayor Mike is giving more power now to the Sports Commission so I hope we can really come up with our own budget for 2011 and onwards so we can run our projects smoothly. Aside from that, any sports activity in the city should pass through the Cebu City Sports Commission,” Daluz said.

To further protect the interest of the city, different sports clubs and associations that would seek support should be evaluated and be accredited before funds can be released for their activities.

In another development, the CCSC is also looking for a new executive director. Unlike the CCSC chairman and its commissioners, which is an appointive position, the executive director will be an employee of the city government and will receive a monthly salary of around P20 thousand.
