Bohol systems go! The unstoppable FiberX takeover

BOHOL, Philippines — In the heart of Tagbilaran City, a quiet but powerful transformation is underway—one that promises to redefine how an island province connects to the world.
With the reopening of Converge business center at the Lite Port Center on April 28, Bohol’s digital future has arrived.
Dubbed by insiders as the “FiberX takeover,” the expansion signals more than just faster internet. It represents a bold commitment to bridge gaps, empower communities and unlock the full potential of Bohol in the digital age.
A gateway to global connectivity
For years, Bohol has been celebrated for its pristine beaches, the iconic Chocolate Hills, and a thriving tourism industry. But behind its postcard-perfect image lay a persistent challenge: connectivity.
In a world increasingly driven by digital access, reliable internet is no longer a luxury—it is infrastructure. This is precisely the gap Converge aims to close.
“Our goal is simple but ambitious—to connect every home and business in Bohol,” said Jonathan Uy, CEO of J-Fiber Internet Services, whose company serves as a managed service partner for Converge.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Uy emphasized that connectivity is the key to showcasing Bohol’s beauty to the world.
“Bohol has so much to offer. But to share that story globally, you need fast and reliable fiber internet,” he said.
The reopening of the Tagbilaran branch is not merely a logistical upgrade. It serves as the operational backbone for a much larger rollout—one that aims to extend fiber infrastructure across municipalities, including far-flung and underserved areas.
From 25% to full coverage
Despite entering Bohol only a few years ago, Converge has already made notable inroads. According to John Paul Aguilar, SVP and Consumer Business Group Head, the company currently covers around a quarter of the province’s municipalities.
“It’s a strong start, but we are far from finished,” Aguilar said. “We will not stop until we reach every town.”
That expansion comes at a critical time. The pandemic reshaped how people work, study, and do business. Remote work, online learning and digital entrepreneurship have surged, creating unprecedented demand for stable internet connections.
“Internet today is no longer just for entertainment,” Aguilar added. “It is already a lifeline—especially for virtual assistants, freelancers, and digital workers who depend on consistent connectivity.”
This shift is particularly significant for Bohol, where a growing number of residents are entering the global digital workforce. Reliable fiber internet opens doors to opportunities that were once geographically limited.
A boost for business and beyond
Local leaders see the development as a game-changer. Mayor Jane Yap welcomed the expansion, noting that connectivity played a crucial role in sustaining the local economy during the pandemic.
“When tourism slowed down, it was the BPO and digital sectors that kept us afloat,” she said. “This is why strong internet infrastructure is essential.”
Tagbilaran’s recognition as a business-friendly city is expected to gain further momentum with improved connectivity. For investors, startups, and digital nomads, fiber internet is often a deciding factor—and Converge’s expansion positions the city as an even more attractive hub.
Meanwhile, Rep. Baba Yap underscored the broader impact of connectivity, particularly in ensuring access to information and opportunities across the province.
“Connectivity empowers people. It ensures that no one is left behind,” he said.
Customer experience at the core
While infrastructure expansion is a priority, Converge is also doubling down on customer service—a key concern among internet users nationwide.
Uy acknowledged that while no provider is perfect, the company is committed to raising service standards.
“This business center is a testament to our commitment to customer experience,” he said. “We are here to listen, to assist, and to improve.”
The newly reopened branch offers customers a more accessible and personalized way to manage their accounts, explore fiber plans and resolve concerns—an effort to complement its growing digital footprint with human-centered service.
The road ahead
Despite the progress, challenges remain. Expanding fiber infrastructure across an island province requires significant investment, coordination and time. Geographic barriers, regulatory requirements, and logistical complexities all play a role.
Yet Converge appears undeterred.
“This is just the beginning,” Uy said. “We are committed to wiring the entire province and bringing world-class connectivity to every corner of Bohol.”
For residents, the implications are profound. Students gain better access to online education. Entrepreneurs can scale their businesses beyond local markets. Remote workers can compete globally without leaving home.
And for Bohol as a whole, the transformation goes beyond speed and bandwidth—it is about unlocking potential
A digital future within reach
As fiber lines continue to stretch across towns and communities, the vision of a fully connected Bohol is steadily becoming reality.
What was once a limitation is now turning into an advantage.
With initiatives like FiberX leading the charge, Bohol is no longer just a tourist destination—it is evolving into a digitally empowered province ready to take its place on the global stage.
In the end, the “FiberX takeover” is not about domination—it is about inclusion.
And in Bohol, the signal is strong and only getting stronger.
A celebration beyond connectivity
The launch was not merely a corporate milestone—it was a celebration that brought the community together.
Following the ribbon-cutting and blessing ceremony, Converge staged a high-energy concert dubbed “Tukar Ta Bai: The Saulog Festival Sound Experience” at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex, drawing thousands of attendees from across the city and neighboring towns.
The event featured a vibrant lineup of local talents, including Banda ni Dukyo, Brownbuds, Joseph Gara performing his original compositions, Cookie$ and Marinong DJ, showcasing Bohol’s rich and diverse music scene.
The night pulsed with energy as live performances blended seamlessly with DJ sets, creating an atmosphere that celebrated both culture and connection. Adding to the excitement were raffle draws that gave away prizes to lucky attendees, further engaging the crowd.
The festivities reached their peak with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the Tagbilaran skyline, followed by a crowd-favorite foam party—transforming the venue into a sea of music, color and celebration.
More than just entertainment, the event symbolized what connectivity truly means: bringing people together—not only through technology, but through shared experiences.
In every sense, it was a fitting tribute to a province on the rise—connected, empowered and ready for the future.
