DSWD-7 has 68 children for adoption
CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) office in Central Visayas have identified 68 children who are ready for adoption, both by Filipinos and foreigners.
Of the number, 44 (22 males and 22 females) are considered “voluntary†children, or those surrendered to the agency, while the remaining 24 are the “involuntary†or abandoned kids (10 males and 14 females).
DSWD-7 Children’s Welfare Specialist Emma Patalinghug said that based on their records, inter-country adoptions, or those made by foreigners, most of the time outnumber local adoption.
The agency’s data showed there were 23 inter-country adoptions in 2013.
“Mas ganahan man gud tang mga Pilipino og baby gyud ang atong atimanon (Filipinos prefer to adopt babies). The foreigners actually prefer toddlers,†Patalinghug said.
She said that Filipinos want to raise an adopted child since its infancy.
As to the foreign adoptive parents, some would take siblings, as they like to preserve the bond these children have as they are already familiar with each other.
Patalinghug said there were two pending inter-country cases matched adoption last month. (FREEMAN)
