Affair eyed in Naga shooting

CEBU, Philippines -  A man was shot dead in Barangay Cabungahan, Naga City, last Friday night.  An illicit love affair is being eyed as the motive behind the killing.

Joel Mangubat, 32, was driving a motorcycle when two men on another motorcycle shot him around 8 p.m.

Mangubat, a resident of the same place, was driving home on his red Honda motorcycle with three passengers onboard when they passed by a dark area.

It was here when the assailants, onboard a white motorcycle, drove up beside the victim’s motorcycle and the passenger shot him twice, hitting him in the left side of the head.

The victim’s motorcycle crashed, spilling the victim and his passengers onto the road while the assailants fled.

The victim was rushed to the Minglanilla District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Police are eyeing two possible motives behind the attack; one of these is an illicit love affair.  One of the victim’s passengers was allegedly his lover.

The victim was also reportedly implicated in a shooting incident in the Barangay Tinaan late last month, wherein a certain Crisanto Cabisares, son of Cabungahan Barangay Captain Federico Cabisares, was killed.

Meanwhile, a member of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity and alleged right-hand man of the late son of the Carcar City mayor was arrested for murder in Barangay Valladolid, Carcar City, last Friday afternoon.

Wilson Ledesma, 25, was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest for murder issued by Judge Simeon Dumdum of the Regional Trial Court Branch 7.

Ledesma is rumored to be the right-hand man of Carl Vinson Apura, the youngest son of Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura, who was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in the same barangay last May.

Ledesma was reportedly standing in the area when police came to arrest him.

The suspect tried to run away but he stumbled and was apprehended.

The suspect was blamed for a shooting incident in Sitio Luan-Luan, Barangay Poblacion, earlier this year where a man was killed and two others were wounded.

The suspect also has a pending case for frustrated murder.  He was imprisoned last year and has posted bail.  —BRP (FREEMAN)
