Hats for men

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The last 10 or so years have seen a huge growth in the way that Asian men dress abroad. More than ever before, they have a better understanding of trends, styles and more importantly, of dressing for their size, shape and lifestyle. So far this has seen smarter, better fitted suits, a better range of shoes and embracing a variety of accessories. The one accessory that has been woefully neglected are hats for men.

Perhaps there is good reason for this - worn wrong one can look like a right idiot. However, worn right he can look fantastic. There are the obvious benefits - no need to style the hair and the protection from the sun and rain. For the men that have struggled with how to style their hats, here's a style guide on how to do it.

The Cool Guys Hat - The Fedora

Street style aficionados know that there is no accessory more stylish than a fedora. Incredibly rakish, it is a good idea to keep everything simple and let the hat do the talking. Also, one should make sure that he invests in one that actually fits - there is nothing cool about a hat that falls over the forehead. The fedora can make a nice accessory - skinny jeans and a simple top are all you need.

The Sports Man Hat - The Snapback

Sorry, but a guy over 30 and not a member of a hip-hop gang or on an international sports team shall leave the snapback alone. However, the younger ones should embrace them. The Snapback is great for throwing on to the head after a sweaty sports session or a day outdoors. With this hat, it is possible to oversize one's proportions and keep to a slick monochrome look.

The Retro Hat - The Buckle Hat

Remember Liam Gallagher in the mid 90s with his sneer, parka and bucket hat? Well the look is back - not the sneer, but the bucket hat. The Spring-Summer 2015 catwalks were awash with models going back to their Britpop basics. If one is lucky, he should still be able to grab a great bargain in one of the many summer sales.

The Traditionalist - The Flat Cap

Nothing says cockney geezer like a flat cap. It's been brought back to life by David Beckham, who wears his anywhere and everywhere. But while this is a perfectly adequate hat choice - one word of caution: Worn with tweed and a blazer, this simple accessory will age the wearer horribly. It is better to dress down with selvedge denim and clean shirting.

The Holidaymaker's Choice - The Straw Hat

Aome people will only feel comfortable when sporting hats abroad, away from the jibes of their mates and social media. If holidaying in warmer climates, the straw hat is the perfect choice. All that's needed is a great pair of swim shorts - and better a six-pack too - a la Magic Mike star Matt Bomer. (FREEMAN)
