CEBU, Philippines - Presented by The Contemporary Art Gallery, definiSIOn proudly stands out as one of Cebu’s more notable art exhibitions this year, highlighting the latest masterworks of Cebuano abstract expressionist Dennis “Sio” Montera.

Collecting nineteen fine examples of excellence in abstract expressionism, Montera’s definiSIOn brings significant meaning to the concept of abstracted social commentaries, with works that are primed in bringing viewers to the past though the artist’s expressed emotions – not though representational illustrations.

Definitive of the creative processes happening in Montera’s artistic sights, definiSIOn’s value as an exhibit goes beyond collecting the artist’s newest works, but also stands as a marker that defines Montera’s own growth and direction as an artist.

definiSIOn, as an exhibit, also stands as a unique marker to an ongoing hallmark in the Visayas region’s overall artistic landscape, where a cursory look at today’s art scene would reveal more and more artists tapering themselves away from classic representational styles, adapting the groundbreaking scope that is inherent in contemporary art as an artistic movement.

Born in 1972, Montera remains to be one of Cebu’s more prominent artistic talents, recently earning the Juror’s Choice, Philippine Art Awards (Visayas Region) title in 2011, and the Grand Prize, GSIS National Art Competition in 2010.

He has also represented the Philippines in different international exhibitions and shows, including the 5th Beijing International Art Biennale in China, the 4th East Java Fine Art Biennale in Indonesia, and the Asian International Art Exhibition in South Korea.

As an artist, Montera is famed for his use of non-conventional mediums, with works defined as process-oriented pieces that are logically formed with no preconceived ideas, allowing form and content to be borne though the process of painting.

With definiSIOn’s featured compositions defined by sentiments, expressions, depth and clarity captured through textures, tones and lines, the collection is compelling in its overall scope, reflecting not only Montera’s intense sense of sight, sound and emotion, but also the artistic prospects and possibilities one can expect from an artist of Montera’s caliber.
