Freeman Cebu Business

Christmas begins!

BUSINESS AFTER BUSINESS - Romelinda Cruz Garces - The Freeman

Just when we have been over the Business Month in Mandaue, the “ber” months call in.  I am sure those of you who love giving gifts are already making your lists and matching them with what is in your pocket.  Oh yes, you have to check out the budget so that you do not end up with exorbitant presents that you skipped meals for, and have them just stored in your friend’s closet.

The “exchange of gifts” which is a tradition in our workplaces have long changed mode.  Now we no longer just wait for the surprise, but already declare what we want.   This is practical, albeit a bit forward for those who are a bit conservative in their approach.

It is best to get the gift that would be most appreciated.  And it may not have to be expensive and need not be stored in the closet as well.  Spa treats range from P150 to P2,500 packages.  A fancy foot massage in a quiet spa may give the necessary relaxation your friend may need this Christmas instead of a blouse that might not fit her or a perfume that will give her unwanted memories.

Dinners that do not just talk about the food but provide your friend with needed respite with a good view of the city could be welcomed.  A gift certificate for two may have your friend enjoy good company with the good food.

Some prefer to give gifts that are made.  Food for Christmas.  Practical and no need for long storage.   Embroidered or crocheted hand towels that are useful both as a tool in the kitchen or in the bathroom.  Items that we want and need but have not had the impetus to buy because we could make do with whatever we have at home – like a wok for instance, so when you fry your fish the oil does not spill on your stove top, or a change of ladles and other kitchenware that would make your old unhealthy cutlery and crockery take their retirement.

More important is the “ fitness” of your gift to your friend.   In buying presents it is not what WE want that should come to fore but what the recipient would want or need.  This means we have to take time to know the wants and needs of our friends and from there decide what to buy.  That is why sale shopping may sometimes not be a good buying time because your decision is befuddled by the availability of a product and the good bargain you derive.  You may realize when you open gifts that you have a lot of the same kind.

So as the days progress on and get “berer”, try to recall who the person really is in your list and find out what he or she wants.  Who knows, in this short while you will get a deeper  view of the people around you and find out, who and what matters most.

Unwrap a good hug this Christmas!
