Safety reminder for a gas station

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

When you fill up at Shell gas stations, the pump attendants bombard you with a litany that includes their safety reminders, whether you want your windshield cleaned, your trash disposed, or if you are hungry, they have a convenience store.

They also ask you if you are paying using cash or card and even without checking, some would also tell you about the benefits of getting a Shell Citibank Visa, which offers a 5 percent rebate on your purchases from their gas station.

Although their fuel is not exactly cheap, we have always preferred to use the V-Power Diesel, which has indeed improved the performance of our vehicle.

Late Sunday night, we passed by the Shell station in Lipata, Minglanilla, which sells the cheapest fuel among those from the same company in the area. When the tank was almost full, we saw through the side mirror that there was a leak near the area where the hose is connected to the nozzle.

We went down to check for sure and indeed there was a leak and when the attendant stopped as we complained, a good amount of fuel, which we believe, was part of what we were paying for, spilled.

We told the attendant that it was dangerous to keep on using that pump and she said that the matter has been reported. If it has been reported, how come they were not instructed not to use it anymore?

The gas companies give its customers spiels about safety, but that incident proved to be contrary to the safety they are trying to teach the motorists.

By the way, months ago on this same station, an attendant who we asked to throw some trash into the bin also threw away the ash tray of our vehicle.

We had to wash and disinfect the ashtray after that incident.

We hope something has been done about that leak.

A reader asked us if we noticed the trash left after the event last Sunday in Talisay City that closed a portion of the Cebu South Road.

We told her that we did notice the empty food packs that were left on the sidewalk when we were heading to the city early yesterday.

She asked if organizers of events are required to clean up afterwards. We believe so, but then as in most events people are too lazy to dispose of trash properly.

The local government units also have to make sure that there would be trash bins all over the place when there are activities so people can properly dispose of their trash.

It would be wise to have your vehicle’s cooling system checked with the kind of weather we are having these days.

Aside from your car air conditioner, you must also have the vehicle’s cooling system checked so that you won’t end up with a steaming vehicle in the middle of the road on midday.
