Digital signage: Advertising that keeps you looking

You can't help but look. Yes, digital signages provide the maximum power to attract viewers and that what makes advertising more effective. More companies now want to grab consumer attention right on the sales floor than in the homes. And this is where digital signage performs at its best – in-store advertising. This is its battleground.        

Digital signage is not going to make a dinosaur out of TV advertising -- that's for sure nor will it replace those static signs that clutter every retail fronts. But digital signage will soon emerge as the most formidable form of advertising that will eventually surpass all other advertising media around in terms of effectiveness and cost benefit to the advertiser.

Digital signage is a new form of advertising. It is not just about a big LCD screen and a load-full of pure ads. Digital signage is about strategic advertising where you get contents and ads at the same time. Unlike TV where you can easily skip ads easily (statistically speaking, 80 percent of viewers do this most of the time), digital signage forces a viewer to see an ad side by side with the content that the audience wants to see. Digital signage, therefore, has the power to engage its audience while giving advertisers optimum view times of their ads than TV.

"Nah, it's just TV with a twist" or so it seems. But digital signage is more than just the ubiquitous larger-than-usual ad-playing TVs you see at the malls. Behind it is a technology that can put a passing shopper to a brief or long stop. In fact, a typical digital signage is run by a computer with a digital signage software and is connected to a Local Area Network or Internet and a digital signage server that manages one or more digital signages in the network. The server maybe in another location and pushes contents to one or more digital signages in the network programmatically.

And why all the trouble to build such kind of complicated setup? It's because a digital signage allows flexibility. Meaning it has the power to push ads by traffic profile. So most of the ads a viewer sees are only those that he or she is likely to buy. In this setup, ads can also be pushed over by setting the time of day to which and to where the ads are to be shown. Thus, if there are more than two digital signages in the network, and depending on the buyers' profile, the server can send a command to the different digital signages to display different or the same ads in an hour or day -- it is really for precision advertising.      

The Philippines is already beginning to adopt this emerging technology. If you notice, we see more digital signages installed in fastfood chains and in the malls than before. And interestingly, Cebu has been at the forefront of developing digital signage technologies not only for the Philippine markets but also for the world.
