Coffee craze transforms to profitable investment

In line with the city’s dynamic and rapid urbanization, coffee shops sprouted like mushrooms creating a so-called “coffee craze” to locals, but an executive from a full-service coffee company noted that the venture is no longer just a craze nowadays but a good investment.

“Coffee businesses are booming in the different cities all over Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao as reflected by the visibility of coffee shops. Right now, a lot of people noticed that there is a big market for coffee in the country,” said Boyd Coffee Company Philippines, Inc. Sales Consultant Honey Jane Quimson in an interview.

She said that since coffee drinking has become part of the Filipino’s way of living it has now become a lifestyle and no longer just a craze.

“Consumers are already educated of what coffee can do to their lifestyle and businessmen as well have seen the huge potential for investment opportunities and realized that there is a big market for coffee business resulting to the boom in the industry these days,” Quimson said.

Boyd Coffee Company Philippines, Inc. is a Manila-based total coffee solutions company which is a joint venture between Boyd Coffee Co. USA and San Francisco Coffee & Roastery Inc. that provides not only the coffee beans and machines, but as well as the coffee training and services.

“Coffee shops is  not a trend anymore because it already surpassed the introduction period and coffee businesses have been sprouting from as far as Mindanao. It has also become part of the lifestyle of every Filipino consumer,” she said.

Even Mickey Supe, OIC of Gloria Jean’s Coffees franchise in Cebu agree that coffee shops now a days no longer find it hard to attract consumers because it has become a popular destination for friends, families and colleagues and a result from this movement, their sales have also been increasing these days. So they have decided to expand their shops to more strategic locations within the city such their newest in SM Cebu’s Northwing.

 However Quimson pointed out that the sustainability of the coffee industry would greatly depend upon the quality of its raw materials.

“We can sustain this industry for a long time as long as we have the quality of beans. The increasing prices of commodities are affecting the prices of beans these days so we can’t also help but increase prices but we try to ensure our clients high quality beans,” she said.

It has become the policy of the company to use locally grown coffee ever since they started. They source their coffee beans (arabica, robusta, Liberica and excelsa) from different coffee producing regions in the country.

By sourcing from our local farmers, the company hopes to contribute to the growing effort to help our coffee industry back on its feet. They are active in supporting programs like ‘Save the Barako’ movement, which hopes to put the Philippines back in the world coffee map through the propagation of the almost extinct coffee variety.

“As a partner of coffee investors, we are making sure that we provide the best grade of coffee beans, equipment and customized coffee concepts. We share the dream of making the Philippines a major coffee supplier again. And we want to say that we are doing our part to make this dream a reality,” she said.
