Alcatel unveils global research partnerships

PARIS — Alcatel has launched a global Research Partner Program to reinforce innovation efforts and sharpen its competitive edge by promoting closer long-term relationships with key universities and research institutes around the world.
The program will apply to all areas of research and innovation of interest to Alcatel.
The Alcatel Research Partner Program combines three aspects of collaboration in a worldwide program. The first aspect is research collaboration. Alcatel and the research partner will participate in scientific and technological development activities to the benefit of both partners.
The second aspect is mobility, training and education. Alcatel and the research partner will support and facilitate the exchange of researchers and students, through temporary assignments of researchers and professors, fellowships and offers of employment for students.
In the third aspect, the partnership is open to early stage programs within the university or institute to commercially leverage innovative ideas.
"The Alcatel Research Partner Program will create opportunities for true collaboration between academia and industry that will cut across geographic and sectoral barriers and should open up exciting new telecommunications research prospects. This confirms Alcatel’s commitment to long-term research programs," said Martin De Prycker, Alcatel chief technology officer.
Seven research partners have already committed to participate in the program: the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique, France’s leading research center in computer science and control; Heinrich-Hertz Institut, the leading German research institute in photonic networks; University of Texas in Dallas, United States; North Carolina State University, in coordination with MCNC from the Research Triangle Park; Sarnoff Corp. in Princeton, New Jersey, USA; University of Stuttgart, one of the strongest universities in research in Germany; and the Information and Communications Technology Science Department of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the largest French public research institute.
Discussions are also going on with IMEC in Belgium, Europe’s leading independent center for microelectronics and information and communications technology research and development, and with GET (Groupe des Ecoles des Telecommunications), which includes the research capabilities of the top French telecommunications engineering schools. Other high-level academic institutions are being considered in Europe, North America and Asia.
