My life, my plan

Kathy Moran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Life, just like the way you use your mobile phone, is what you make it.

In the days of old, when I first got my cell phone, there was just prepaid and postpaid. I chose a plan and lived with what I paid for.  That is no longer how the telcos work: Globe Telecom has made it its mission to make sure that a plan that a postpaid customer gets is one that is made for how one uses the cellphone.

Each customer has a different way of using their cell phones, we are told. After connectivity – not just texting and calling – but IG, Twitter, Facebook, among others, is a must for every cell phone user.

“We at Globe believe that customers have different needs, interests, and live different lifestyles. Some may want to get a more flexible data plan which they can use to access any app or site, while some may only use data for Facebook access alone,” says Erli Valdez, vice president for Postpaid Business at Globe Telecom. “With this understanding, we constantly work to make our postpaid plans more flexible and attuned to customer needs.”

Millennials want connections

It can get a bit confusing to users like myself. Yet, I have often been in the company of many younger cell phone users who swear by the need to have as many connections online as possible.

Really, for today, what is important is being able to keep abreast of the latest developments as they unfold and also to be able to participate and get involved in whatever it is that is happening here in the Philippines or anywhere else around the world. Smartphones, in particular, have helped us cross boundaries of physical distance and time zones.

Valdez adds that younger customers, or what Globe likes to refer to as millennials, are digital natives – people who have never known a world without the Internet.

“They are used to having everything at their fingertips. Anything less is unacceptable, and that’s what makes them demanding,” adds Valdez. “Older customers have seen days where your cell phone is only meant for calling and texting (or maybe as an occasional alarm clock or calculator), where you need to actually log on to an actual desktop computer to access your e-mail, where you only watch movies on a VHS or DVD player, where you need a boom box or a discman to listen to music wherever you go. Since older customers have seen a world where there’s a specific place and device for everything, they tend to be more forgiving.”

Let’s get personal

It comes as no surprise then that Globe customers want to be able to get the best connections possible – something that Globe has done over the years to keep its customers up to speed on the latest mobile advancements, which includes its postpaid plan offerings.

Ever since Globe pioneered the customization proposition in 2010 with its mySuperPlan (the first-ever customizable plan in Asia offering), the company’s postpaid business has grown by leaps and bounds. Valdez explains that being mindful about the needs of the customer paved the way for the company’s postpaid business to retain its leadership position in the market.

But today, Globe believes that with the launch of the myLifestyle Plan, it will cater to the customers’ needs to do even more with their devices over and beyond calls and texts, based on their lifestyles and interests.

“We know that their needs now go beyond core telco services such as calling and texting – though we know that this is still important,” adds Valdez.  “This is why we took calls and texts out of the equation by offering built-in unlimited calls and texts to Globe and TM with the myLifestyle Plan, so that they can focus on the more exciting things that they can do with their smartphones such as data and apps usage,” shares Valdez.

A plan made for the way you live today

The new myLifestyle Plan now comes in just one plan, Plan 499, making it simpler to avail. It is also more relevant and compelling as a postpaid plan because of the following: (1) built-in unlimited calls and texts to Globe/TM, (2) wide array of surf, lifestyle, and classic bundles to choose from as add-ons depending on your needs and interests, and (3) the more bundles you add, the better handset you get for free.

Valdez shares that for most of their customers, Facebook, Viber, and Instagram are their top go-to apps.  Yet, she looks forward to the day when customers will realize that music and movie streaming are affordable, too. It seems that there are users who still feel that streaming equates to a bigger expense on their postpaid plans.

“We will try to change that perception through our affordable and premium content offers, mostly priced at only P299/month,” says Valdez.

The new Globe myLifestyle Plan is made for the way we live now, whether you’re young or young at heart.
