Medina’s marine ecosystem all shored up

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Volunteer scuba divers from Metro Pacific Investment Corp. took the lead in the continuing underwater cleanup of Duka Reef Marine Protected Area in Medina, Misamis Oriental as part of the Shore It Up program.

Located across Duka Bay Resort in Gingoog Bay, Duka Reef is a 30-hectare fishery reserve, which takes pride in its coral research, enhancement and protection measures.

The reef’s live colorful corals and fish are the main attraction of the village, considered as the tourism capital of Misamis Oriental since 2006.

A simultaneous solid waste cleanup along the seven-kilometer stretch of nine beachfront barangays of Medina was also held, participated in by 2,023 volunteers from government and community organizations.

The two-day underwater and coastal cleanup netted 787 kilos of mostly non-biodegradable solid waste.
