Success in NCR: A potential source of hope and inspiration

GO NEGOSYO PILIPINAS ANGAT LAHAT! - Joey Concepcion - The Philippine Star

Recently, I had interviews with Angelo Palmones of DZRH, and Rowena Salvacion and Emil Sumangil of DZBB, where we talked about the strategic importance of focusing our vaccines in the National Capital Region (NCR). We discussed how focusing and succeeding in NCR can increase our country’s confidence in the vaccines and how this could serve as a potential source of hope and inspiration to every Filipino. Here are some highlights of those interviews:

On vaccination target and strategizing in NCR with Angelo

Angelo: Ilan ang target natin na bakunahan? Kasi mukhang ang sinasabi po ng IATF, sabi ni Sec. Galvez, we will just eye for 50 percent at least.

Kung titignan natin, we are trying to achieve a target dito sa NCR. It’s ideal na mag-focus muna tayo sa NCR to attain herd immunity kasi medyo ambitious na mag herd immunity tayo sa buong Pilipinas within the year, baka mahirapan yan if within the year. Kung i-focus natin ang vaccination sa NCR, since dito ang pinakamalaking problema ngayon on the ground and to our economy, malaki ang magiging epekto niyan since malawak ang activity dito sa NCR at focused dito ang malaking contribution to our GDP. Like in a warfare, ang importante is to focus on the epicenter.

Kaya tayo, dapat mag-ingat tayo at importante talaga na mabakunahan tayo because this is the only solution that we can balance saving lives and livelihoods.

Sa ginagawa nating wearing of mask, face shield, and social distancing, it only allows us to co-exist, pero hindi talaga yan ang solusyon. If we want to win this war, i-focus muna natin sa NCR, after winning in NCR by achieving herd immunity, then madali na ang ibang lugar kasi we proved already that we can win in one area. Kaya lahat ng vaccine, kailangan ibuhos muna dito sa NCR, yon ang balak ni Sec. Charlie, pati yung private sector sa NCR din namin ibubuhos, including our donation to the national government. It was nice that Sec. Charlie asked us where we want to focus our donation to them and we said NCR, that’s the aim. It is more attainable to say that we can achieve herd immunity in NCR before the end of the year.

On the three strategies and focusing on NCR with Rowena and Emil

Joey: So tatlong strategies yan, let me explain yung plano ng private sector. Kailangan natin i-focus yung gyera natin sa NCR kasi eto ang epicenter ng infection at yung ekonomiya natin ay nakasalalay dito sa NCR dahil malaki ang contribution ng NCR sa Philippine economy, there are 13 million people here. Yung darating na vaccines sa private sector, almost 13 million doses na yan from AstraZeneca and Moderna, dagdag mo pa ang from Novavax and Covaxin, yan ang tinutulong namin na mga vaccines, so kailangan may focus tayo dito.

We can achieve herd immunity kung number one, we successfully secure the vaccines. Andyan na yan, nakuha na natin. Number two is vaccine confidence. Yan, medyo may kulang tayo.

Then the last one is implementation.

If you look at America and Singapore, tignan lang natin na malubhang-malubha ang situation nila last year, pero tignan mo ngayon, halos back to normal lahat sila.

Also as we talk about sources of hope and inspiration, I would like to express my condolences to the family of Rey Lapid, the man behind the success of the iconic R. Lapid’s Chicharon & Barbecue—to Violy and his children King, Ryan, and Anais. A great friend and an even better greater mentor to our mentees, Rey gave hope and served as an inspiration to many of our aspiring entrepreneurs, he was one of the most loved and well-received mentors. We will miss you, Rey.
