Nestlé Philippines targets zero GHG emissions by 2050

MANILA, Philippines — Nestlé Philippines is set to implement initiatives aimed at achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

On Friday, the food and beverage company launched its Kasambuhay for the Environment commitment, which aims to halve its GHG emission by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

Nestlé Philippines said the program is in support of the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement to reduce and avoid carbon emissions by 75 percent as of 2030.

As part of its commitment, the company is set to implement various initiatives such as strengthening its plastic neutrality.

Last August, Nestlé Philippines became the country’s first multinational fast-moving consumer goods company to attain plastic neutrality through collecting and co-processing the equivalent amount of plastic that it generates in its packaging.

At present, the company has already collected 18,000 metric tons (MT) of plastic waste.

Nestlé Philippines chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki said the company is targeting to collect and divert an annual average of 26,000 MT of plastic waste away from landfills and oceans, an important step towards ensuring none of its waste ends up in the environment.

“Tackling climate change cannot wait, and neither can we. And so let us all move forward for the sake of our children and future generations, rising to the challenges that lie ahead, together and united,” he said.

Aside from the new commitments, Nestlé Philippines said it is developing technology to make its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

The company is collaborating with public and private sector partners to ensure that none of its packaging ends up in the environment, and to educate consumers about solid waste management.

Apart from the reduction of plastic waste, Nestlé Philippines said it has switched to clean energy. Its factories in Luzon, as well as its Makati office, run on 100 percent renewable electricity.

In addition, through its Nescafé Plan and the Common Code for the Coffee Community or 4C, Nestlé Philippines is enabling Robusta coffee farmers in Mindanao to learn regenerative agriculture and sustainable coffee production.
