MANILA, Philippines — West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has invested P1 billion in its leak repair projects last year as part of its non-revenue water program,

Maynilad said it has completed the replacement of 133 kilometers of old, leaky pipes in 2020.

This allowed the firm to improve water pressure and service reliability for its customers in Quezon City, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Navotas, Manila, Pasay, Parañaque, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, Bacoor, Cavite and Imus.

“Despite quarantine restrictions, we pursued our pipe replacement projects so we can sustain service level enhancements for our customers,” Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said.

“At the same time, it enabled us to continue generating much-needed jobs for our contractors and suppliers,” he said.

To date, Maynilad has replaced almost 2,700 kilometers of old pipelines since the company’s re-privatization in 2007.

The pipe length is 67 percent of the water distribution network that Maynilad inherited 14 years ago.

The pipe network in Maynilad’s concession area is the oldest water system in Asia, with some portions dating back to the Spanish era.

Pipe replacement is a component of Maynilad’s non-revenue water reduction program.

Other activities covered by this program include active leakage control, network diagnostics, meter replacements and district meter area management.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base. It serves the areas of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon, and certain portions of Manila, Quezon City, Makati and Cavite.

The company is owned and managed by Maynilad Water Holdings Co. Inc. a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investments Corp., DMCI Holdings Inc., and Marubeni Corp.
