MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has employed different solutions to secure its network connectivity and protect its data from cybersecurity threats.

In a statement, the BOC said it has procured a back-up network to ensure the stability of its connection, which is highly significant to facilitate trade and to serve stakeholders transacting with the bureau.

“Once completed, the BOC will have two network providers and the ports will be connected with two network connections,” the agency said.

The bureau  is also utilizing cybersecurity solutions to prevent cyber attacks, breaches and identity theft, protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of its data.

“BOC employs the services of the top cybersecurity company which provides network, email, and desktop security,” it said.

Moreover, the BOC said it established a security operations center through its network provider, that is equipped with a next generation firewall and anti-virus software.

It also created a cybersecurity emergency response team to ensure immediate actions are taken against cybersecurity issues.

“With these projects in place, the Bureau of Customs is more committed to providing efficient, seamless and simplified services to its stakeholders by ensuring strong and stable network connection that supports the various ICT (information and communications technology) systems of the bureau,” the agency said.

Meanwhile, the BOC also established its Customs Operations Center last Wednesday, which serves as a command and control center for all the intelligence and enforcement operations of its 17 collection districts nationwide.

“The Customs Operations Center facility is designed to house the different intelligence, enforcement, risk management, and scanning systems of the bureau,” the BOC said.

The facility will manage an intelligence database, the Electronic Tracking of Containerized Cargo (E-TRACC) and the Vessel Monitoring System.  The center also has capabilities to utilize the universal risk management system (URMS) and provide remote access to the scanning or x-ray systems of the BOC.

The IT-integrated facility will be manned 24/7 by personnel from the Enforcement Security and Services and the Philippine Coast Guard.

Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero said the facility is an important tool for the BOC, as it would strengthen the bureau’s capability to protect the country’s borders, while facilitating trade and ensuring collection of revenues.

“The Customs Operations Center is a significant part of the bureau’s thrust on reform and transformation”, Guerrero said.

The BOC also said it remains committed to improve its services through the implementation of various modernization projects.
