Maynilad spends P200 M for pipe repairs last year

Louise Maureen Simeon - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc.  allocated P200 million last year for its leak repair projects as part of its non-revenue water program.

The water company plugged over 21,000 pipe leaks  within its concession area, bringing its total leak repairs to more than 360,000 since its re-privatization in 2007.

Leak repair is a vital component of Maynilad’s NRW management program, which seeks to bring down physical and commercial water losses.

The leak repair activities enabled Maynilad to save some 291 million liters per day of potable water, enough to supply the water requirements of more than two million customers.

“Through continuous leak repairs and pipe replacements, we have managed to renew 57 percent of the water network that we inherited in 2007,” Maynilad president and CEO Ramoncito Fernandez said.

“Sustained investments in network rehabilitation are essential to ensuring uninterrupted water supply for our current and future customers,” he added.

Proactive leak detection and repair are among Maynilad’s activities aimed at reducing water losses due to physical leaks in the distribution system.

It uses state-of-the-art technology—such as the Sahara mobile leak detection system—to detect underground pipe leaks for repair.

Maynilad has already invested over P20 billion for its NRW management program since 2007.

Other initiatives under the NRW program include selective pipe replacement, network diagnostics, establishment of district metered areas, and replacement of old water meters.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base. It serves the areas of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon, and certain portions of Manila, Quezon City, Makati and Cavite.

It is owned and managed by Maynilad Water Holdings Co. Inc. a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investments Corp., DMCI Holdings and Marubeni Corp.
