LWUA leads P565 M water dev’t at Tacloban Yolanda settlement site
MANILA, Philippines – The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) has been designated as lead agency in the development of potable water supply systems estimated to cost P565 million for the resettlement sites in the northern part of Tacloban City being built for thousands of families dislocated by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).
According to plan, the water system development in the resettlement sites will be undertaken in two phases.The initial stage of which is the medium-term plan to address the immediate needs of the resettled families with an estimated project cost of P110 million, P72 million of which will become part of the long-term or permanent water supply project with an estimated cost of P527 million. Both projects have been provided funding by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
In pursuit of the project, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was recently entered into among LWUA, the National Housing Authority (NHA), the Department of Public Works and Highways Region VIII (DPWH R-8), the Metro Leyte Water District (MLWD) and the Tacloban City Government identifying and delineating the roles of each agencies.
LWUA administrator Andres F. Ibarra said LWUA would be responsible for sourcing of funds needed for the projects, including the procurement of water delivery trucks to be used extensively for the immediate water needs of the resettlement sites.
