CAAP bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in airports, planes
This Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, photo provided by Andrew Zuis, of Farmington, Minn., shows the replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone belonging to his 13-year-old daughter Abby, that melted in her hand earlier in the day. "She's done with Note 7s right now," Zuis said of his daughter. Reports of more replacement phones catching fire are trickling in, and the South Korean tech giant faces more scrutiny after earlier criticism for being slow to react and sending confusing signals in the first days of the recall.

MANILA, Philippines – The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has prohibited bringing Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices to airports and on commercial and cargo flights.

Acting Director General Jim Sydiongco has issued Memorandum Circular No. 34-16, ordering CAAP to ban Galaxy Note 7 devices for aviation safety.

“All carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices are forbidden in airport premises, on-board the aircraft and cargo flights,” the memorandum circular, dated Oct. 13, read.

“Moreover, all operators are hereby advised to strictly implement this memorandum circular,” it added.

CAAP said the memorandum was released despite Samsung offering to replace all old Galaxy Note 7 devices purchased before Sept. 15., 2016 after some units reportedly exploded or caught fire.

The replacement devices may be distinguished from the old one by the green battery icon found on the notification area, power off screen, and always on display.

The airport authority also issued Advisory Circular 1, series of 2016 late September, calling on airline operators to prohibit passengers from using the mobile device in airport premises and inside aircraft. CAAP also urged airlines to require passengers to keep the device in their carry-on luggage so any accident can be immediately resolved.

Prior to CAAP’s advisory, a number of local airlines banned the use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 cellular phones during flights, following the lead of the US Federal Aviation Administration.
