Global Finance names Tetangco one of world’sbest central bankers

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The international business magazine Global Finance once again named Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. as one of the world’s best central bankers.

This was the fourth time that Tetangco was given an “A” rating for his leadership of the Philippine central bank, which was seen vital to the growth of the country’s economy.

Global Finance has been publishing the Central Banker Report Cards, which grades central bank governors of nearly 70 key countries on a scale of A to F, every year since 1994.

Besides Tetangco, the heads of the central banks of India, Israel, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Taiwan were given an “A” this year.

A represents an excellent performance down through F for outright failure.

“Global economies are starting to recover, despite rising geopolitical risk in certain markets. Central bankers once again face challenging times in managing monetary policy to positively influence economic stability and growth – and some of the changes in our scores this year reflect those challenges. Every year, we assess the determination of central bankers to stand up to political interference and their efforts at influencing their governments on such issues as spending and economic openness to foreign investment and financial services,” Global Finance publisher and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo said.

This year, 17 central banks are being graded for the first time.
