BIR exceeds June collection goal

- Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

Manila, Philippines - The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) reported yesterday its total collecions hit P81.34 billion in June, surpassing the P75.4-billion target set for the month by nearly eight percent..

The June 2012 collections also exceeded year-ago figures by P14.44 billion or 21.58 percent, the BIR said.

The latest tax-take brought the BIR’s January to June revenues to P521.16 billion, higher by P63.16 billion or 13.79 percent compared to the collections in the same period last year, data from the bureau also showed.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares attributed the better-than-expected collections of the bureau last month to the sustained positive performance of the regional offices as well as the Large Taxpayer Service (LTS) group, which is in charge of taxing the big private companies.

“This month, the regional offices continued with their double-digit performance and the LTS, too. That’s the reason, the (numbers) look well but we will still continue with what we’ve been doing,” Henares said.

“As was the case in previous months, collections from the regional offices showed a double-digit growth. For June 2012, collections by the regional offices amounted to P28.09 billion, P5.72 billion or 25.58 percent more than the collections made in June of 2011,” she said.

The regional offices exceeded the goal set for June 2012 by P2.23 billion or 8.63 percent.

Similarly, the Large Taxpayer Service collected P50.83 billion in June, higher by P8.56 billion or 20.26 percent more than collections a year ago.

The LTS group exceeded its revenue goal for the month by P3.04 billion or 6.37 percent.

Henares said that even with the higher-than-expected collections In June, the agency would continue to step up efforts to hit its full-year goal of P1.06 trillion.

“We are intensifying our efforts against delinquent taxpayers. We will be filing cases against them and we will be going after their properties,” Henares said.

The BIR has been filing tax evasion cases before the Department of Justice every other week under its Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program.
